Hueco is a 20-liter lightweight frameless pack designed specifically for bouldering. Hueco’s unique features are optimized to create an efficient and enjoyable bouldering experience, whether heading to the crag or the climbing gym.
This project was a collaboration with Jerred Mace and Jett Chang-Lam. Research, ideation, and construction of prototypes were all done by each member of our team. My primary roles in the project were conducting user research, creating parts of the pattern, and sewing and constructing parts of the bag.
Research and Ideation
Our research began by conducting an interview with an expert user on their current methods of transporting climbing gear when bouldering. We specifically looked at the compatibility of transporting both a crash pad (usually carried on the climber's back) and a gear pack.
After conducting user research, we identified the key pain points with current bouldering gear transportation solutions. We chose four main criteria for optimization.
1. Organization
2. Crash Pad Integration
3. Cleanliness
4. Shoe Storage
Ideation + Prototyping
My initial ideation focused on crash pad compatibility with straps designed for comfortable chest carry or a slim profile for easy sandwiching. I also explored specialized compartment configurations for separating chalk and climbing shoes from clean gear.
My first prototype developed on these ideas, incorporating a book-style fold allowing the pack to be laid flat inside a crash pad for sandwich carrying, and a detachable chalk bucket.
After comparing and contrasting prototypes with my team, we developed a refined prototype that incorporated the most important aspects of all of our designs. It featured wide set straps for comfortable chest carry, a slim profile, external shoe pockets for aeration, and a compartment to keep chalky items separated from other gear.
Final Design
The pack’s external drawstring shoe pockets allow easy access to climbing shoes and ensure they stay aerated. The lower chalk bag pocket keeps chalk contained and out of clean items and gear. Wide-set S-shaped straps allow for comfortable carry on the back or in front of the chest, making it compatible for the user to carry a crash pad simultaneously.
